Jerry grew up in the barbershop. His father owned the business and property since the late 50’s. His father was a father figure to many. Jerry recalls wondering how many children his father actually had, being that all the young men knew his father as “Pops.” Needless to say the sense of brotherhood was alive and well. Here, in the shop, was Jerry’s second home. Naturally when Jerry came of age, he followed his father’s foot steps and took the reigns of the shop in 1995. For Jerry, engaging with the community, hearing their stories, and word of mouth community news brings joy to his heart.
Just this year, his father finally retired from barbering at the shop, at the age of 82 years old. It has been said that when you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. This has been absolutely true for Jerry’s father.
With children of his own that have all gone off to be successful in the fields of education and the legal profession, Jerry makes it a point to lead by example. He cannot count how many young barbers he has trained, “20 at least” he shares – and in a way they are each a part of his legacy.
